Manchester United have made a substantial call over the future of Kobbie Mainoo.
Fabrizio Romano disclosed on Wednesday that the club had scheduled a meeting with Mainoo, his agent, and Ruben Amorim to discuss his current situation at Old Trafford. This was in response to rumors that he was actively looking for a move elsewhere.
The young player, who did not play a single minute in the first two Premier League games of the season, was rumored to have hinted at a late summer departure.
He would go on to play all of United’s Carabao Cup match that night in the second round, but the true question will be whether he will still be in the starting lineup when the team meets Burnley on Saturday.
United block Kobbie Mainoo’s request to leave on loan
It appears that David Ornstein (and later Romano) confirmed last night the conclusion of the midweek talks between Mainoo and club executives.
According to the transfer expert, the 20-year-old had told United that he wanted to go on loan prior to Monday’s deadline, but his demands were turned down.
According to reports, he had assured supporters that he still saw his future in M16 and had made it plain that he didn’t want to make a permanent move elsewhere.
Mainoo poised to stay in final days of window
The important decision-makers, however, have vetoed any potential loan and informed Mainoo that he must remain and compete for a position under Amorim.
Romano continues by saying that more than 15 suitors have expressed interest in signing the FA Cup winner, so if he were permitted to start a fresh, short-term endeavor somewhere else, he would have his choice of the bunch.
His current contract has a 12-month extension option and ends in 2027.
