Manchester United have made some bad sales in recent years, but there are fewer worse than Scott McTominay to Napoli.
In 2023, the Scotsman left Manchester United for Naples, starting his Serie A career in Italy under Antonio Conte.
Scott McTominay had no idea that a year later, after winning the Scudetto and the division MVP award, he would be immortalized in the city.
Without a doubt, McTominay is a United regret. Nevertheless, despite these outstanding honors, the Red Devils may regret Alvaro Carreras’ sale even more.
Alvaro Carreras starts off well for Real Madrid
Under Xabi Alonso, Carreras—formerly Fernandez—has already made a name for himself as a starter in Real Madrid’s squad.
Carreras, who is only 22 years old, has played every minute of Madrid’s three La Liga games thus far, helping them to the top of the league standings.
Their most recent win was a 2-1 victory over Mallorca, as Alonso’s team secured three points with two fast goals in the first half. Along the road to three points, he also made an important block.
Throughout, Carreras was a bright spot and received excellent feedback from his boss.
Alonso said post-match: “I was already following him and was very happy to see him arrive. It wasn’t possible at the World Cup, but it’s now.
“He knows the club, and you expect that to be good, but his level is extraordinary. He does almost everything well.”
Manchester United never gave Alvaro Carreras
Carreras was never given a chance at Old Trafford, despite United’s reputation for cultivating young players. He never appeared for the main team at Old Trafford, despite having numerous problems at left-back over the years and having had successful loan stints at Preston and Granada.
After another successful loan, he then moved to Benfica in 2024 for a mere £5 million, enabling the Portuguese team to activate their buyout option. Real Madrid jumped in with a £42 million acquisition prior to this summer.
Declaring that he could surpass the McTominay contract indefinitely and become the finest left-back in the world at such a young age is not an absurd assertion.
Classy business as always, Red Devils.
