Matheus Cunha injury: Progress, potential return date for Man Utd star

United’s much-needed and pivotal 3–2 victory over Burnley on Saturday was an emotional rollercoaster.

Despite controlling the game, the Red Devils gave up the lead twice before winning in the 97th minute thanks to a penalty kick from Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese scored his spot kick to spare United’s blushes, unlike last weekend at Fulham.

The United players’ emotional outburst at the end of the game indicated that overcoming newly promoted Burnley was crucial following the midweek loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

At Old Trafford, though, it wasn’t all positive news for United. Ahead of the September international break, Ruben Amorim was terrified when Matheus Cunha, their £62.5 million summer acquisition, was pulled out in the first half due to an injury.

Here’s the latest injury news regarding the Brazilian forward.

What Injury Does Matheus Cunha Have?

It’s unclear exactly what caused Cunha’s injury, but it seems that the 26-year-old hurt his hamstring in the match against the Clarets. After only 30 minutes at Old Trafford, Joshua Zirkzee took his place and headed right down the tunnel to get treatment. Mason Mount had to leave United at halftime because of a fitness concern.

Speaking after the match, Amorim couldn’t shed much light on injuries to Cunha and Mount admitting: “It was hard to lose Cunha and Mount, because Mount played 30 minutes with an injury. I’m concerned about that, because they are so important for us. We will see.”

He later added: “I don’t know [how they are], I don’t know. We will check them. We need those guys really bad to be really competitive.”

When Will Matheus Cunha Return From Injury?

Cunha’s recuperation schedule is uncertain until the full nature of his injury is known. Medical testing is required to assess the severity of the attacker’s problem, but he may be out of commission for days, weeks, or months.

Cunha’s injury is severe enough, according to the Brazil national team, that he has withdrew from international duty for the forthcoming break. As a result, he will miss matches against Chile and Bolivia during the next two weeks.

Better news, though, is that Cunha was “spotted leaving Old Trafford walking freely” following the clash with Burnley, according to Manchester Evening News, which may indicate a less serious problem for the summer recruit.

It remains to be seen whether Cunha will be available upon United’s return to action, with Amorim’s men next taking to the field when they visit local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on September 14.
