What happened to Man Utd’s strangest-ever signing 10 years after deadline day transfer

Manchester United have been extremely busy on transfer deadline day over the years, with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Radamel Falcao and Anthony Martial all signing on the final day of the window.

The Red Devils have agreed to pay £12.8 million to Royal Antwerp for goalkeeper Senne Lammens, securing another signing on deadline day.

Ruben Amorim and United have made a play for the Belgian, who has traveled to sign his contract and have a medical because neither Andre Onana nor Altay Bayandir have appeared to be very convincing in goal lately.

They selected 23-year-old Lammens, who had the most saves of any goalie in the previous campaign, after being connected to Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and Argentina.

Although some have criticized the move as somewhat unexpected from United, it is nothing compared to their sole agreement on the day of the transfer deadline, February 2, 2015.

During his first summer in charge, Louis van Gaal brought in Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, and Angel Di Maria.

They then signed a player on loan from Bolton Wanderers as the winter transfer window closed, although he never even played for the main squad.

As part of the agreement that saw Kellett join at the last minute after appearing ready to return to Plymouth Argyle, young Saidy Janko traveled to Bolton.

“I went in and the manager said there’s an option for you to go to Man Utd on loan if you want,” Kellett recalled in an interview with the Daily Star.

“So that’s how it came about. I was going down to the training ground to sign for Plymouth and I ended up coming away signing for Man Utd!

“At first I was quite shocked by it. But then further on in the night I got quite emotional because it was quite a big thing. I can’t really remember my initial reaction, I just think I was in a bit of shock really.”

What happened to Andy Kellett after Man Utd?

In addition to playing against his parent club in the Manchester Senior Cup, Kellett made ten appearances for the Under 23 team and won the Barclays Premier League Under 23 title.

As he recovered from his injury, he also played with Robin van Persie and filled in for first-team training, where Di Maria nutmegged him in his very first session.

Following the brief loan, Kellett joined Wigan Athletic and went on to play for Chesterfield, Notts County, Fylde, Alfreton Town, Guiseley, and Bury FC, who went bankrupt and eventually regrouped in the lower divisions.

After leaving Bury in 2024, Kellett is still without a club. In addition, the left-back has been employed by BT Enterprise since February 2022 as a technical delivery advisor.
