Arsenal star Kai Havertz could face a huge spell on the sidelines as a devastating report revealed the extent of his latest injury.
Questions concerning Havertz’s role this season were raised as soon as Arsenal signed top target Viktor Gyokeres earlier in the current summer transfer window.
Despite missing several months due to a hamstring injury, the German international played 36 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions last season.
Despite Gyokeres taking his starting spot for Arsenal’s season opener against Manchester United, Havertz made a cameo on the field for 30 minutes during the second half of the game.
But the striker’s plans didn’t exactly work out because he sustained a knee injury that, according to a recent report, may need him to take yet another extended hiatus from football.
Having returned to full fitness after missing the majority of the second half of the previous season due to a hamstring rupture sustained during a training camp in Dubai, Havertz was undoubtedly keen to play again.
However, a knee injury he acquired after his Old Trafford cameo means he will now need extra time to rehabilitate; according to a report from German publication BILD, it may be some time before he can play again.
According to the report, Havertz’s current treatment plan calls for two weeks of conservative therapy and medical injections while club doctors work to manage the problem.
However, if this fails, Arsenal will have to accept that the 26-year-old may need surgery to address the problem and be out for another extended period of time.
Havertz’s departure leaves Arsenal light up front, with Mikel Merino most likely to remain Gyokeres’ backup for the foreseeable future. Gabriel Jesus is also sidelined as he recovers from a cruciate ligament injury.
Even yet, it is unlikely that Arsenal will try to acquire a new forward to replace Havertz with little over a week left in the summer transfer window, especially after they recently closed a deal for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.
