Manchester United have been offered the chance to reignite their pursuit of Belgium international Arthur Vermeeren following the news that RB Leipzig are already willing to sell the midfielder.
In the middle of the park, the Red Devils are rumored to be in need of reinforcements. Because of Brighton’s not-for-sale policy, a possible deal for Carlos Baleba has failed.
The Cameroon international is still a target for Manchester United, but since he won’t be joining this summer, the Old Trafford team will have to go elsewhere.
Although he has become a player of admiration, Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart is as improbable as Baleba to make a move this late in the transfer window. But in the Bundesliga, a new alternative seems to be developing.
With a humiliating 6-0 loss to Bayern on Friday, RB Leipzig began the new season away from home under new manager Ole Werner. Young midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, who seems to be a big casualty of Leipzig’s summer rebuild, was conspicuously absent from the game.
Vermeeren could be Man Utd’s Baleba alternative
After starting off as one of Europe’s most promising midfield talents at Royal Antwerp, Vermeeren has had a few challenging years. He failed to fit in with Diego Simeone’s team after an early January 2024 transfer to Atletico Madrid.
Six months later, he went for Leipzig on a loan that was later extended for €20 million. Despite only joining the German team full-time this summer, he has already been judged surplus to needs.
Leipzig has to let go of a number of players because they currently have too many midfielders on their roster and have an agreement with Marlon Gomes of Shakhtar Donetsk to join.
According to transfer source Sacha Tavolieri, Leipzig has put Vermeeren available. He is a player who may command a respectable price. Man Utd, who were interested in the Belgian when he made his breakthrough at Antwerp, may have a great chance here.
Vermeeren only cost Leipzig €20 million, thus it’s unlikely that he will fetch more than €30–40 million, given his current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €27.8 million. For this reason, he would be far less expensive than Baleba.
Furthermore, data analytics company SciSports thinks he has the ability to play a significant role for Manchester United in the future. Vermeeren shares the Brighton star’s potential (84) and is a year younger than Baleba (88.2).
Vermeeren has also demonstrated his versatility in midfield by playing as a deep-lying destroyer as well as a more advanced, high-energy box-to-box player. He will provide Ruben Amorim’s midfield the legs he so urgently needs.
Although he started 26 games for Leipzig last season, his inexperience in the Premier League raises concerns. Vermeeren has the ability to develop into a top midfield player in the future, but it would probably take some time for him to catch up to the Premier League’s standards.
