Ten Hag’s error continues to cost Man United, former star scores again for new club – opinion

With the Red Devils revamping their roster throughout the summer, Ruben Amorim’s mission to restore Manchester United to its former glory is well and fully under way.

The 20-time Premier League champions must perform noticeably better in 2025–2026 if the Portuguese manager is to retain his position after they finished in 15th place the previous season.

The Red Devils have several alternatives in the final third thanks to the early arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and United added Benjamin Sesko as their new central striker.

Manchester United needs reinforcements in other parts of the field, though, since their midfield is unbalanced and holding them back.

Scott McTominay’s sale a big mistake

In retrospect, United’s choice to transfer Scotland international midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli a year ago seems to have been a very bad one.

The 28-year-old did not fit into the Dutchman’s plans at Old Trafford, therefore former manager Erik ten Hag approved the sale.

As Napoli swept to the Scudetto in 2024–25, McTominay was named Serie A Player of the Season. The Scot scored 12 goals and assisted four teammates.

Additionally, it took the Scotland international just 17 minutes to break the tie in a 2-0 victory as Antonio Conte’s team began their 2025–26 campaign on the road against Sassuolo on Saturday.

Even though United was unable to sign Carlos Baleba earlier this summer, there is still hope that the Red Devils may expand their midfield alternatives.

Bruno Fernandes is relied upon to inject creativity from central areas, but for United to advance, he needs strong players surrounding him.

Since joining from Paris Saint-Germain as McTominay’s successor, Manuel Ugarte has played poorly, and the decision-makers will undoubtedly regret the Scot’s departure.

Given his success in Italy, McTominay would undoubtedly reject down the opportunity to rejoin his boyhood club, even if United made the same error with Paul Pogba in 2012 before re-signing him from Juventus in 2016.

United return to Premier League action on Sunday in a trip to Fulham, with Amorim needing to get his midfield balance right if the Red Devils are to get their first win of the new season.
