Manchester United are hoping to appoint Michael Carrick within the next few hours, and the former Middlesbrough manager is hoping to bring in former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate as part of his coaching staff, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
Woodgate represented a number of clubs during his playing career, including Tottenham, Leeds, Newcastle, and Real Madrid. His only trophy as a player came during his time with Tottenham, winning the League Cup in the 2007/2008 season.
Following his retirement, Woodgate has gone into coaching and was most recently with Carrick at Middlesbrough. Woodgate also spent time with Bournemouth as a first-team coach, before being appointed as their manager towards the end of the 2020/2021 season.
Carrick Looking to Bring Woodgate to Man Utd
GIVEMESPORT sources have confirmed that Carrick is hoping to bring former Tottenham defender Woodgate to Old Trafford with him. It’s understood that Carrick’s appointment is set to be confirmed within the next 24 hours as United close in on replacing Ruben Amorim.
Darren Fletcher, who is currently in caretaker charge of the Red Devils, and Jonny Evans, who recently left his role as loans manager, could also form part of Carrick’s coaching staff.
Woodgate, 45, departed Middlesbrough back in June 2025 alongside Carrick, and has been out of work since then. Carrick is clearly looking to assemble a set of coaching staff mixed with people he knows and has worked with before, alongside others who know what it takes to play for the Red Devils.
With Carrick set to be appointed in the coming days, it looks as though he will be in charge ahead of their game against Manchester City at the weekend.
Carrick Knows Man Utd Better Than Most
In the modern era, it’s rare that a player spends 12 years at one club, but that’s exactly what Carrick did at Old Trafford. After spells with West Ham United and Tottenham, Carrick moved to United in 2006, and spent the rest of his career with the Manchester club.
Carrick has also spent time as part of the coaching staff at United, after being handed a position under Jose Mourinho. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then kept him as part of his staff after he came in, before he was even named as caretaker manager at Old Trafford when Solskjaer was sacked.
There aren’t many managers out there who know the club better than Carrick.
