Wayne Rooney snubs Man Utd when naming current Premier League team he’d like to play for

Wayne Rooney has named the Premier League team he’d choose to play for if he were still a footballer and neither of his former clubs got the nod.

After Alex Ferguson left Manchester United, the Red Devils were beginning to show their age, but Rooney, the team’s all-time top scorer, had enjoyed 13 fruitful years at Old Trafford.

The Premier League title was last won by United in 2012–13. Even though they have been winning, they have fallen farther down the table with time and ended up in the lowest reaches in 2024–2025.

With his head over his shoulder, the England star named one of United’s fiercest rivals as his ideal modern-day destination when asked which Premier League team he would like to play for.

The former Birmingham City manager gave a surprising response when appearing on Kelly Somers and comedian Kae Kurd’s podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show.

Kurd posed the following question in the most recent episode: “If you were playing now, which team would you have like to be on? Which squad do you think you would have joined and wreaked havoc?

Rooney responded, “I do like what Arsenal are doing,” “Over the past few years, I believe we’ve witnessed that. They are strong, difficult to play through defensively, and they have been clamoring for a number nine, in my opinion.

“Now that they have [Viktor] Gyokeres, they have that. However, I believe that Arsenal’s current style of play isn’t overplaying; they’re also practicing set pieces and getting balls into the box.

“I think the way Arsenal are playing at the minute it’d probably suit me more.”

Rooney, who is currently 39, would have excelled on any squad that could have generated opportunities.

After making his debut as a teenager with the Toffees in 2002, Rooney scored 208 goals for Everton and United, making him the only player with more Premier League goals than Alan Shearer and Harry Kane.

The Gunners have scored six goals and given up zero goals in their first two 2025–26 games, giving them a perfect start to the season.

They defeated Leeds United five games to one on Saturday after defeating Manchester United 1-0 on the road the previous weekend.
